Predictions and Picks: The 84th Academy Awards

The Robey Theatre - Spencer, WV
The theatre was founded in 1907 and continues to show feature films.
Last December, I spent a nostalgic, Robey evening in Spencer watching a bridal ensemble of comical camaraderie.
(I enjoyed the Oscar nominated 'Bridesmaids' at this little gem)

Updated: Winners featured in red

The Nom Nom Nominated Cream of the Corn. The 84th Academy Awards...
Airing Sunday, February 26, 2012 at 7e/4p on abc.
Getcha popcorn ready.

After 24* years of watching the Academy Awards, I have concluded that the winner of the almighty grand tiered Oscar cake of all film awards amongst the land does not necessarily need to be a Box Office hit, or appeal to the mass audience.  Essentially, the winner of the prestigious Academy Award is a film in which holds cultural and societal importance, that will respectably resonate for years to come.
*It's safe to say that at the ripe age of one, I was watching this televised event. Yea, find a documentation that says otherwise. Wikileak it. I dare you.

BEST PICTURE
‘The Artist’ WINNER
‘The Descendants’
‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’
‘The Help’
‘Hugo’
‘Midnight in Paris’
‘Moneyball’
‘The Tree of Life’
‘War Horse’
'The Artist' will win because it honors the glorious grandeur of early 20th century cinema. For the film nerds who enjoy a quiet night of Méliès, this is nothing new, but to the PC owning-GTL donning Shore kids, this is a new audience, a new medium, a new respect.

BEST DIRECTOR
Woody Allen, ‘Midnight in Paris’
Michel Hazanavicius, ‘The Artist’ WINNER
Terrence Malick, ‘The Tree of Life’
Alexander Payne, ‘The Descendants’
Martin Scorsese, ‘Hugo'
'The Tree of Life' was a story told through the eyes of Malick. Although I didn't love the film, I appreciated the film and respect the artistic motifs of Malick's visual journey. However, the prize will go to Mr. Hazanavicius. Why? Because it is THE visual essence of Cinema prestige: a.) it's foreign  b.) it's black and white  c.) it's silent

BEST ACTOR
Demian Bichir, ‘A Better Life’
George Clooney, ‘The Descendants’
Jean Dujardin, ‘The Artist’ WINNER
Gary Oldman, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’
Brad Pitt, ‘Moneyball'
I'd love Clooney to win just for the cute friendly jabs at a certain fellow nominee

BEST ACTRESS
Glenn Close, ‘Albert Nobbs’
Viola Davis, "The Help"
Rooney Mara, ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’
Meryl Streep, ‘The Iron Lady’ WINNER
Michelle Williams, ‘My Week With Marilyn'
This year, this is the one category where I believe every single female on the nominated list should take home the Best Actress Oscar.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Kenneth Branagh, ‘My Week With Marilyn’
Jonah Hill, ‘Moneyball’
Nick Nolte, ‘Warrior’
Christopher Plummer, ‘Beginners’ WINNER

A Hollywood living legend. A well deserved nominee. It's Captain VonT, duh, come on.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

‘A Separation’
‘The Artist’

I would love to see 'Bridesmaids' get the honors. The plane scene itself tackles tough issues like, controlled substances, economic hardships, homeland security, and civil rights!

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
‘The Descendants’ WINNER
‘Hugo’
‘The Ides of March’
‘Moneyball’
‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’
If you like baseball, you will like this movie. If do not like baseball, you will like this movie. 'Moneyball' is the Oscar 2012 All American Splendor.
